For further information on Courses and Programs:

Placements

Placements will be from week four at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.  You will get your clinical school roster from your clinical lecturer during orientation at the hospital in late February. During orientation you will have the opportunity to attend the Jump Start Academic Preparation Program which will equip you to succeed at academic assessment.   We will be in touch with you with more information about orientation closer to the date.

Your tasks

1. Set up your email and computer

Check your UQ emails regularly. You can access your UQ email through my.UQ or have it forwarded it another address. Your UQ email address is used for the delivery of all official UQ emails. Also, ensure you have private access to the internet and a computer that supports a basic Windows-style or Mac-style platform, including word-processing and spreadsheeting programs and anti-virus software.

If you require assistance with logging into my.UQ, setting up your devices or forwarding your email, contact AskIT.

2.   Provide us with all forms and certificates asap

You need to provide a lot of documentation before you can start your clinical placement in week four.  Some of it will take weeks to organise so you should get started as soon as you can.  There is so much documentation required, you may want to download this printable checklist (PDF, 217, KB) [this will need updating for 2016 - give it permanent URL] so you can tick things off as you do them.

Blue Card

Download and print the Blue Card application form (PDF, 187KB) - complete part D and lodge it with us. Bring two forms of identification such as a driver's licence and Medicare card. We will submit the form for you. This form is for renewal applications for current card holders too.

Immunisations

Download and print the immunisation form (PDF, 640KB) and lodge it with us.  You will need to get a doctor to complete this and they may need to run tests or order vaccines for you.

First Aid Certificate

Show us a copy of your First Aid and CPR Certificate.  First Aid training providers include our school, UQ Sport,  St John’s Ambulance,  Queensland Ambulance ServiceTAFE Queensland

Fitness to Undertake Clinical Practice Questionnaire

Download, print and complete the Fitness to Undertake Clinical Practice Questionnaire (PDF, 273KB) - return it to us in an envelope marked confidential and addressed to the Undergraduate Program Director

Criminal history check

Get a National Police Certificate (criminal history check) and show it to us - retain this certificate so you can produce it on demand during your clinical placements. We do not keep a copy of this certificate.

Queensland Health orientation

You need to understand Queensland Health requirements regardless of where your clinical placement will be.

Read Queensland Health orientation requirements, complete the Queensland Health Orientation Checklist and lodge it with us.

Deed poll

Complete the Student Deed Poll for Australian Students or Student Deed Poll for international students and lodge it with us.

OH&S

Complete Occupational Health and Safety Orientation (username: external, password: elmo) and print your certificate twice.  You will need to give us one copy and retain the other so you can produce it at Queensland Health's request at any time.

All documentation is to be presented to the School office.

3. In February

Enrol in courses

Look up the Master of Nursing Studies course list and enrol in these classes via SI-Net.  Don't worry about:

  • signing on for lectures or tutorials. You are not required to do this for your program.
  • timetable clashes. Your clinical lecturer will explain how your timetable works during orientation.

Get your badge

You will be required to purchase a badge (cost $7) to identify your course and year of study (this is different to your Student Identification card).

To purchase a badge pay at the Student Centre (advise Student Centre staff that you are paying for your School of Nursing and Midwifery program/year level badge), then present your receipt and student card to the NMSW Reception, level 3, Chamberlain Building (Bldg 35), St Lucia Campus and advise the staff there of your program and year level to receive your badge. Badges can also be purchased during orientation. It is a requirement of your clinical school that you wear your program/year level badge at all times.

Get your textbooks

Download the Master of Nursing Studies textbook list (PDF, 488KB). [update for 2016 and give permanent URL]

Apply for a book prize if you need help purchasing textbooks.

Arrange your uniform

Order at least 2 UQ Nursing or Midwifery polo shirts. Download and print the order form (PDF, 88KB) and lodge it with us by 20 February.

You will collect your order from us before your placement. Any orders not collected within three months of the delivery date will be returned to stock and all payments will be forfeited. Orders cannot be changed or cancelled. Please note: all prices are correct at the time of publication, however, may be subject to change.

Also arrange your own:

  • smart black trousers, shorts or skirt with the uniform shirt.  Gaberdine or polyester fabrics with at least one pocket work best.  Denim is not acceptable.
  • fully enclosed black lace-up shoes.

Clear your diary for March

During the first three weeks of the semester you will be undergoing intensive preparation for your clinical placement. Attendance at all scheduled sessions of the training program is compulsory. You will need to attend sessions at your clinical site or a University campus Monday to Friday for these first three weeks, so it is vital to have any other commitments organised so they do not clash with your University commitments.

Congratulations on your offer.  We look forward to meeting you at Orientation.
