Seminar: Proposed Voluntary Assisted Dying Legislation – Implications for Nurses and Social Workers
Join Adjunct Professor the Honorable Matt Foley for a special seminar on the Proposed Voluntary Assisted Dying Legislation – Implications for Nurses and Social Workers. This seminar will discuss the ethical and practice implications of such legislation for nurses and social workers.
The Queensland Parliament is due to consider such legislation in coming months following a report of the Queensland Law Reform Commission expected in May 2021. Victoria has enacted the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017. Western Australia has enacted the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2019. The Tasmanian Parliament has in March 2021 passed similar legislation, the End of Life Choices Bill.
The seminar will be chaired by Adjunct Professor the Hon Matt Foley, social worker and barrister, and will include the following speakers:
- Mary Draper AM, social worker, former UQ lecturer, member of Implementation Taskforce of Victorian legislation
- Professor Ben White, Law Faculty QUT, co-author of draft Queensland legislation (Appendix A to March 2020 Report of Qld all-party Parliamentary Health Committee)
- Professor Jane Turner, psychiatrist and UQ course co-ordinator and researcher in Psycho-Oncology
- Pierre Baume, barrister at law and registered nurse, Foundation Dean and Associate Professor Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences Griffith University (Gold Coast campus); Foundation Director, Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (Griffith University)
