Background

Aim: To understand the end-user experience of current systems for inpatient bloodstream infection (BSI) diagnosis and management across healthcare and pathology services.  To also identify potential barriers and facilitators to the potential introduction of a rapid detection and response team for inpatient BSIs.

Participants: Healthcare professionals involved in BSI diagnosis and management, from 3 facilities in the Metro North Hospital Health Service (MNHHS) and healthcare consumers who have experienced a BSI in one of the MNHHS facilities.

Method: A qualitative, descriptive 2 phase study.  Phase 1 will include semi-structured interviews and focus groups with clinical, executive and consumer end-users to investigate current processes and barriers/facilitators for the planned RESPOND-BSI pathway.  Phase 2 will involve co-design workshops with clinical, executive and consumer end-users, to develop the future RESPOND-BSI pathway and business case for implementation.

Expected Outcomes: A comprehensive understanding of real-world BSI diagnosis and treatment workflows.  Capturing a co-designed RESPOND-BSI pathway and application for future implementation and evaluation.
